What is Emotion Flow in a Podcast?
Emotion flow in your podcast is incredibly important. Your ideal listener will come to your podcast hoping to improve their day or take a break from reality for a little bit by tuning in. Perhaps they are coming to your show and they are already a little bit sad, or maybe they’re feeling stressed out from their day job or home life. When they interact with your content, you want to make it a goal to boost them out of this sad mood by keeping them engaged and listening.
Your listeners will have pain points, or things that cause them stress in life. It is your goal to try and approximate what may be common pain points in the lives of your audience. If your target audience is young college students, a pain point for them may be lack of independence. Consider what this might be for the audience of your show.
Discussing Examples of Podcast Emotion Flow
Let’s consider an example or two.
First, we have Mary. She is a stay at home mother. She's 35 years old and her pain points are that she lacks motivation and energy. She is currently seeking a podcast that not only gives her some extra knowledge, something she didn't know about, but inspires her and makes her feel something again. Now, as the podcaster, your goal is going to be to provide that safe place for her so that during the podcast flow, she can leave your podcast motivated, inspired, and really energized.
Our second example is Matthew. He is a full-time lawyer and he is 42 years old. He works extremely long hours and he doesn't have any time for extra activities. When he does have some down time, he finds it relaxing to listen to a podcast. Ideally, he wants a podcast that makes him laugh, and takes his mind off work. His goal here is to have time to disconnect from his work life by listening to your podcast. Now as a podcaster, you will provide that entertainment for him, but only if you are aware that that is what he wants from your podcast. If you’re successful, Matthew will be able to leave your podcast happy, inspired, calm, and excited to come back and listen again.
By focusing on this ideal listener profile, you will be able to understand your audience more. By doing so, you will be able to craft your podcast into exactly what your audience is wanting from you. Take advantage of the tools that are available to you. You may want to consider doing some Instagram polls or asking questions in your Facebook group to do some market research in your community of listeners.
Here are some sample questions when asking for this type of feedback:
● What episodes did you enjoy?
● What would you like to hear more of from this podcast?
● Why do you listen to podcasts?
Challenge: Try to create a sample persona of your ideal listener. Why do they listen in? What is their story?
